We are pleased to offer this most recent reprinting of the Akathist to Martyr Varus, which is adorned with a new cover and new layout for the inner pages. In recent years there has been a growing veneration for Martyr Varus, specifically as an intercessor for those who reposed outside the Orthodox Faith, and many of the faithful turn to him in prayer for their reposed relatives. As stated in the Introduction, the ever-memorable Patriarch Alexis II noted: "Chapels are being built in honor of the martyr Varus, and icons are being painted. From his life it follows that he possessed a special desire to pray to God for those who died unbaptized. During the era of militant atheism in our land, many people lived and died unbaptized, and their believing relatives want to pray for their repose. Such private prayer has never been forbidden. But in the prayer of the Church, during the divine services, we only remember the children of the Church who have become members of her through the Mystery of Baptism."
